Deputy President William Ruto has sparked political fires in Baringo after he promised to fund a candidate in the 2017 poll to unseat Baringo Senator Gideon Moi.
In what is seen as taking a political war right to the former First Family’s doorstep, Ruto has reportedly ‘planted’ a strong figure to stage a bruising battle against the Baringo senator.
Moi has been seen as a likely threat to Ruto’s 2022 political ambition of taking over the House on the hill after his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta retires, if they get reelected. But the DP is not letting anything to chance and has hence promised to ‘deal’ with Gideon Moi, popularly known as ‘Kityo’ within Baringo.
Sources privy to the DP’s political machinations intimated he has assured Betting Control and Licensing Board member Simon Chelugui, who was a popular governor candidate in the county, his full support in the race for senator. He reportedly prevailed him to shelve governor ambitions and run for senator.
Sources said a political meeting of the political who-is-who within Baringo was held at the now famous DP Ruto’s home in Sugoi village where the ‘war’ against Moi was declared.
“The DP was very clear that Gideon had to be tamed and the only person to face him was Chelugui. This was supported by all leaders present,” the Standard quoted a Bernard Kipruto, who was among those who attended the meeting.
The Standard reported that, ‘the DP promised to fund Chelugui to face Gideon in what is being seen as Ruto’s strategy to test the senator’s strength in preparation for the 2022 elections.’
The move angered a section of Baringo residents who rushed online to vent their anger. They accused the DP of dragging voters into his beef with Gideon Moi vowing to reject ‘forced’ candidates.
